Isn't that what all the commercials tell us, that you're only as old as you feel? Well, science has some bad news for you. The behaviors of the elderly that you write off as old-person lameness, and your behavior that the elderly credit to dickish rebellion, are all based in biology. And no, you can't stop it. As you age ... #7. Your Brain Will Stop Getting Pleasure from New Music When you're a kid, the absolute worst music in the world is whatever your parents are listening to. Your dad is ou...

Vision Scientists Demonstrate Innovative Learning Method

article

New research suggests it may be possible to learn high-performance tasks with little or no conscious effort View a video showing researchers explaining Decoded Neurofeedback. New research published today in the journal Science suggests it may be possible to use brain technology to learn to play a piano, reduce mental stress or hit a curve ball with little or no conscious effort. It's the kind of thing seen in Hollywood's "Matrix" franchise. Experiments conducted at Boston University (BU) and ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, recently demonstrated that through a person's visual cortex, researchers could use decoded functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to induce brain activity patterns to match a previously known target state and ther...

Unofficial "Look Up in 1Password" bookmarklet for iOS 5

article

1Password is one of my most-used iOS apps, since I need it to log in to any site which requires a password. Since the introduction of 1Password on iOS, Agile has provided a bookmarklet which will open 1Password and then search for the current domain. That helps the fact that 1Password can't be fully integrated with Safari on iOS. Unfortunately the bookmarklet stopped working in iOS 5. According to the company's blog, Agile has discontinued the bookmarklet and won't be updating it. They are working on "something better coming up for the future." They went on to add that they want to make 1Password's own integrated browser "more usable as "a Safari replacement, or rather partial replacement." While I will reserve judgment until I see it, I have serious res...

Several uses for shipping containers

There are many reasons people could be rendered homeless and hence temporary roof shelter over their heads before they get back on their feet again. There are natural disasters such as storms, hurricanes, fires or other human instigated causes such as vandalism. It is the responsibility of every government to offer their citizens a standard lifestyle and security but some of these disasters can take place with no being able to stop them. With the help of emergency humanitarian organizations, people who are affected can be helped by being offered temporary shelter. This is one of the uses of shipping containers. These containers like the name suggests are usually used for shipping cargo on ships on seas but since they are huge, strong, economical and cheaper as compared to building h...

Job interview? Avoid these 6 psychological "leaks".

article

Chances are, you are woefully unprepared for that upcoming interview and you don't even know it. Talking points rehearsed? Check. Company and interviewer researched? Of course. Answers to tough questions practiced? You bet. Psychological tells analyzed? Uh, come again? Without knowing it, you communicate your deep psychological beliefs, attitudes and weaknesses every time you open your mouth. I've interviewed people who looked stellar on paper, but who exposed their hidden tendencies, issues and mental roadblocks as soon as they spoke. Dr. Aaron Beck, the "father" of cognitive therapy, first proposed the theory behind cognitive distortions. Cognitive distortions are limiting or weak habits of thinking that are not accurate. We all suffer from these occasionally, b...

Seeming Green

article

COPENHAGEN – When Denmark’s new government ministers presented themselves to Queen Margrethe II last month, the incoming development minister established his green credentials by rolling up to the palace in a tiny, three-wheeled, electric-powered vehicle. The photo opportunity made a powerful statement about the minister’s commitment to the environment – but probably not the one he intended. Christian Friis Bach’s electric-powered vehicle was incapable of covering the 30 kilometers from his house to the palace without running out of power. So he put the electric mini-car inside a horse trailer and dragged it behind his petrol-powered Citroën for three-quarters of the trip, switching back to the mini-car when he neared the television cameras. The stunt produc...

You added a blog because every business needs a blog, right? (Maybe not.) You added lots of images to make your design more dynamic. You expanded your About Us page without thinking about what potential customers want to know. You added videos because videos are cool and maybe if you c...
